On The Road Again

March 1, 2008 · 10 Comments

Well, not really, but look what arrived in the mail yesterday:

I’m partial to the Adventurous, and as a backup plan, the 190s:

Remember those inane job interviews where the human resources dork asks the inevitable So, where do you see yourself in five years?

I finally have a good answer. Now I need to figure out how on earth to afford a Roadtrek.

Completely unrelated to travel, but if you know why the Atlantic Monthly continues to print sexist shitwritten by women, for other women, go weigh in at Redsy. Or open the phone book and marry the first single guy you find with a phone number and a pulse. Lest you end up a sad, sad single mommy like Rachel from Friends. Or several other fictional characters the author of this piece offers up as a reason to marry someone, anyone, if you find yourself a single parent.

Also, I still ache for New Mexico. Fiercely.

Oh how I love New Mexico

Our extended plan now involves the purchase of a small motor home some day too.

Last year, when my husband had another job offer he was considering, I said (mostly seriously) that if he took the job, we were going to buy a motor home and live in it!!! (’course we’d want a bigger one for that.) A lot of the beaches here have places you can pull up and park for nothing or next to nothing, and I’d LOVE that.

If you’re willing to travel to buy one, and buy one used, in places like where I live where the “Snowbirds” come for the winter, in the spring there will be lots of good deals on used RVs people just want to get rid of. And since they are usually older people, they are pretty well taken care of and clean and neat.

You have no idea how much I’d love to just get in my car and go, go, go.

Those first few photos in Taos document my at morning walk from my hotel to the conference center last fall. Sigh.

Ok, so now you have me looking at RV’s. Actually, we’re planning a cross country trip this summer and are considering renting an RV. Do you have any rental pointers?

I still ache for New Mexico, too.

As for Atlantic Monthly, I have some guesses….

I’ve never rented an RV. I did see several at various attractions out West from Cruise America:

It looks like they have a buy back program too. They’re somewhat catering to Europeans who on the strength of the Euro might be better off buying an RV and then selling it at the end of an extended trip.

How long are you guys traveling? Since it is summer, I would probably opt to camp most of the time, and stay in a hotel if you find yourself in really brutal weather. I’d love to know how renting goes. I’ve thought about it, but the mileage estimates seem low to me, and I feel like I would probably get screwed $-wise.

Is your Vanagon not up for the trip or?

I tried that strategy once (marrying someone, anyone, because you’re a single mom). Of course, I was 21, and it was the most monumental mistake of my entire life. I don’t care how many other fuck-ups I manage in my lifetime, none of them will ever compare to that marriage. Never. Ever.

Also, I feel your New Mexican lust. Except I feel it for Italy.

Helmut, our Vanagon, is still a great car, but it is a pain in the ass to take all the car seats out to make use of the lower bunk.

    We also host and intern (like an exchange student) from Ivy’s language immersion school and that’s tight quarters for 3 adults and 3 kids. And I’d like to have some modest kitchen facilities. We have the Westfalia pop up, but not the other amenities. I need BIGGER. I need BETTER =;?}

We’d be on the road for close to a month. We’re thinking a Northern route, maybe even Canada, from Oregon to Connecticut to see my uncles. And back. Our friends just bought a used RV. Maybe the way we should go in the long run.

Also as soon as Ivy outgrows the internal restraints on her booster, we’re screwed because Helmut only has lap belts in the rear.

that sky….around our house (in TX) we call it “Taos Blue” because it’s a color you see nowhere else.

And the best domestic margarita I’ve ever had was at the Taos Inn.

    Sigh. Feeling the wanderlust myself.

Thanks for the wonderful pictures on a day I needed some happy blueness!
