Here are a few of my favorite shots taken from the Cambridge side of the Charles last night. I would like to invest in more equipment beyond the kit lens. A tripod or even a camera bean bag would be nice to own, in addition to a larger memory card, and another lens or two. Last night I held the Rebel on the top of my head and tried to stand as still as possible to reduce shake.

There was also very little wind, hence a lot of smoke hanging around. More shots from the 4th available here.
So wrong it’s right 70s ballad available here.

Amazing pictures! Wow! They totally make my lame-ass shots where you can *almost* tell there are fireworks in the distance look like crap. Hope you had a great 4th!

Thanks Judy!
Lots of happy accidents here, and a lot of weird blurry, badly lit shots too—I would like to learn more though.

Great job, Karrie! I like your idea of putting the camera on your head for a makeshift tripod. The fireworks that my family and I saw were stunning, but the photos we took are all worthless.

I really love that first picture. I want a tripod, too. Did you use the night setting on the camera or did you set it yourself?
If NB was not on the way I would be taking a digital photography class this fall.

MT: They’re all manual, shot in RAW. I would love to take a class too. There is a lot of free info online, but I’m not at a place yet where I really have control of my shots.

Hey Karrie,
I have the same camera and my shots were horrible especially compared to yours. What settings did you have it at? (I did about F/11-14 aperture and 2-3seconds, handheld)

Were these taken from the MIT/Mass Ave Bridge? If so, we must’ve been near each other. I didn’t take pictures, but wrote a ‘blog about it:
